ABOUT Captain Cleve Evans >>
I'm Captain Cleve Evans. I grew up on West Point Lake, a Chattahoochee River reservoir in west central Georgia. This gave me easy access to water which in turn gave me easy access to fishing. With this access and the freedom of growing up out in the "country", I took full advantage of it. I cut my teeth on the local species and honed my skills with spinning and bait casting gear rarely seeing anglers wielding fly rods in my neck of the woods. Fortunately, my grandparents had a cabin on the banks of Coopers Creek in the north Georgia Mountains and also a beach house in Panama City FL. This gave me the privilege of fishing the mountains for trout and the near shore coastal waters and bays of the Florida Panhandle throughout my childhood.
Of course that was enough to have anyone hooked for life! During my twenties, as my skill and knowledge of various waters and techniques developed, I was drawn to the fly rod for the new challenge it presented, but also for the added capabilities it provided when targeting certain species both fresh and salt. Once I learned to cast with reasonable accuracy and minimal frustration, I never looked back! Rarely did I pick up a conventional rod for the better part of ten years, chasing everything from Brook Trout in the mountains to Tarpon along Florida’s gulf coast. I honed my skills and decided that it was time to live my dream of guiding others to the thrill and enjoyment of sight fishing for various species along Florida’s Forgotten Coast with Fly tackle and light conventional gear. In 2012, I ended a ten year career as a restaurant owner and dedicated myself to guiding, which leads me to here, Forgotten Coast on the Fly.
It is my goal as a guide to provide you with a safe, enjoyable, and productive trip. I can assure you that I will do everything in my power to provide you with the opportunity to catch the target species and possibly a variety of other species depending on the type of trip we plan and the weather and water conditions the day of the trip. I am passionate about guiding others, whether it be to their first fish on fly, a personal best of a particular species, or a day filled with fast action on conventional tackle. I enjoy teaching people new techniques and consider everyday on the water to be a learning opportunity for the anglers as well as myself. I am comfortable with beginning anglers just looking to have fun learning a new hobby, or seasoned experts who look at it more as a passion and lifestyle going after a personal best. At the end of the day, I want to step off the boat knowing that we as guide and angler, did everything we could to be successful and that we made lasting memories and built new friendships that will hopefully grow stronger with future trips!
